Class profit

Know which classes make money

A full room isn't the same as a class that pays. Studio Bolster shows what each class has left after teacher pay and its share of rent, and how many more students a short one needs.

Which classes make or lose money: a bar for every class, teal to the right for money made and red to the left for money lost, each time it runs

How the money is figured

For every class, every time it runs:

  • Money in from each student, by how they paid. A member's monthly price is spread over the classes they took that month. Packs, drop-ins and ClassPass count at what you actually get.
  • Minus teacher pay, from your pay rules: each teacher's hourly rate, with or without paid check-in time.
  • Minus its share of rent, by class length. A 90-minute class carries more than a 60.

What's left is the class's profit. If it's below zero, you see how many more students would cover it, at what a student brings in for that class.

Example

Wednesday noon Yin, an average of 4 students.

Money in$52
Teacher pay−$53
Rent share (75 minutes)−$35
Left overshort $36

At about $13 a student, it needs 3 more students a class to cover itself.

A list of what to do, not just numbers

The report starts with a short to-do list: classes to cut, combine, shorten or move; classes where most students come through ClassPass; classes where the usual teacher has changed; and your best classes, so you can add more like them.

Every morning

A daily check on the schedule

Classes and events sometimes fall off the schedule: a series ends, a recurring class wasn't renewed, an event lost its date. Studio Bolster checks every morning and flags anything that disappeared, so you hear about it before a student shows up to a locked door.

Teachers see their own side of this too. Each one sees which of their classes cover their costs, without seeing anyone else's numbers or your rent.
